How to add more Safety to your Campsites

Safety is a priority when it comes to camping— especially if you’re in bear country. Bears of all sizes create a big problem when they prowl your campground foraging for food. The most secure and safe way to avoid this problem is having a safe way to enclose your food and trash away from the bears.

The BPFL Series food storage lockers have been designed, tested, and certified “bear resistant” by the Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center in partnership with the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee which consists of representatives from the U.S. Forest Service, the National Park Service, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Bureau of Land Management along with several other government agencies from the United States and Canada.

The IGBC’s preferred term for certified products is “bear resistant.”  The committee does not guarantee anything to be “bear proof” because given enough time, these clever, hungry, and powerful animals can probably get into almost anything.  The testing protocol is designed to keep bears out of the receptacle for at least one hour. Most bears lose interest and move on in much less time.

Safety in bear country, for humans and the bears, includes keeping bears out of humans’ food and trash. Eating human food and ingesting the packaging and waste products is unhealthy for bears.

Our BPFL Series Food Storage Lockers are available in capacities of 15, 25, and 30 cubic feet. The various sizes accommodates small and large coolers as well as other food containers you need to keep away from bears. Most cooler lids can be opened inside the locker so you don’t have to remove a heavy, ice-filled cooler to access your food.

The full-width front door swings open 180 degrees so there are no obstructions to loading or accessing the food locker contents. The doors can be opened with one hand and comply with ADA guidelines for reach and operability.

Another product to help keep your campsites safe includes the certified bear resistant trash and recycling receptacles offered in three sizes. The commercial duty latch is concealed under a steel guard designed to allow access to human hands, but to keep bear paws out.

This rigid box structure design of the food locker and receptacle foiled the testing bears’ efforts to open the doors or deform the box.  The food lockers and trash receptacles must be anchored down to a secure surface to truly be bear resistant.

These products are designed to help you—and the bears—enjoy the outdoors safely.
