Football season is in full swing, which means tailgating season is upon us. With tailgating comes all sorts of fun, and the best part: food. If you’re sick of buying that platter of hot wings and want to do something a little more hands-on, we’ve got you covered. Our team here team at RJ Thomas Mfg. Co tried two easy DIY tailgating recipes that could be exactly what you’re looking for at your next tailgate.

1.) Breakfast Cinnamon Roll Twists
Tailgating can start in the early morning hours, so having a fun breakfast recipe can be a helpful way to wake up. The secret with this recipe is to make sure you buy the right kind of cinnamon rolls. Many types of canned cinnamon rolls aren’t the kind you can unwind, even if they appear that way on the can. (We found that out the hard way).
Ingredients Needed
- Pillsbury Grands Cinnamon Rolls
Equipment Needed
- Sticks or skewers for roasting
- Plates
- Paper towels or wet wipes (it will get messy)
Directions
- Build your fire. Burn until flames are low to medium in height and there are coals. (This provides more consistent heat with less chance of burning the cinnamon roll.)
- Once the fire is hot, wrap the cinnamon roll around the end of the stick or skewer while pinching the ends to make sure it stays in place.
- Continuously rotate the roll over the fire. (This part requires patience!)
- Once the dough is nice and crispy, remove from heat. Pull the roll off the stick and use the icing provided as dip.
TIP: Keep rotating the roll over the fire continuously, otherwise, you’re going to scorch the outside, and the inside won’t get cooked.

2.) Tailgate Pizza
Who doesn’t love a good pizza? This recipe is easy to make, and even easier to clean-up. Feel free to get all sorts of creative with the toppings you prefer. This can be made directly on your tailgating grill with no pan required.
Ingredients Needed
- Premade flatbread, pizza crust or pita bread (we used Boboli Pre-baked Pizza Crusts)
- Pizza sauce
- Mozzarella cheese
- Pepperoni
Equipment Needed
- Grill/campfire ring with cooking grate
- Tongs or oven mitts
- Tin foil
- Plates
Directions
- Like most grill recipes, you want low to medium flames and a nice bed of coals for an even heat source. With the CBP-135, you can actually adjust the height level of the grate. We kept the grate a little higher to avoid burning the bottom of the pizzas.
- Cut a piece of tin foil large enough to envelop the whole crust. Lay the pizza crust out on tin foil and spread the sauce on top, followed by the cheese and pepperoni. Remember that you can use any
precooked meat or veggie topping of your choice. Wrap up the pizza in a tin foil packet and seal it. Make sure the top of the foil isn’t touching the pizza toppings, otherwise it will stick and you’ll have a mess. - Place the foil packet on the grate. Check the bottom of the crust periodically to avoid burning. Cook until the cheese is melted and crust is golden, and then carefully remove from the grate. We had a bit of cheese stuck to the tin foil, but otherwise, it looked, smelled, and tasted amazing.
TIP: Using tin foil is a must when making the tailgate pizzas. The foil protects the flavor of the pizza from too much smoke, significantly reduces the risk of burning, and makes for easy cleanup.
